People of Moor Pool: Geoffrey Salminen

As part of our 10th anniversary celebrations, we’re featuring ten ‘People of Moor Pool’.

Geoffrey Salminen’s family has deep roots in Moor Pool and he can often be seen taking one of his vintage cars out for a spin around the Estate. We caught up with him recently and asked him a few questions:

How long have you lived on Moor Pool?
I have lived on the Estate for over 70 years. My grandparents were one of the first couples to move into Carless Avenue. The road surface was not finished, and hedges and trees were saplings. Gradually the new houses were being occupied by young couples and families started.
What do you think makes Moor Pool such a special place?
I have always enjoyed living on the Estate, we had an allotment behind the Square, it was so peaceful there.
What is your favourite Moor Pool memory?
I have some pleasant memories – past Jubilee celebrations, the Edwardian music hall evening hosted by the drama group and the group’s wonderful plays in the Hall. As a youngster being a ‘stacker’ in the skittle alley, of which I am still a member and enjoy. Cycling with no cars about and memories of my father and grandfather playing bowls.
What is your favourite spot on the Estate?
One of my favourite areas of the Estate are the spinneys on Carless Avenue. In spring, the fresh green on the trees and the display of crocus, snowdrops and daffodils.
What did it mean to you to save the community spaces in 2014?
It was a great relief when the Trust was able to purchase areas of the Estate out of the hands of Grainger. We all helped to raise money, giving a magnificent result.
Is there anything you’d like to see happen on the Estate over the next 10 years?
As to the future, who knows? The Trust and Residents Association perform a first class job on enforcing conservation but there are some rogue alterations…
