For key stages 1, 2 and 3, Moor Pool is an opportunity for fun, activity and discovery, and applied projects that involve visiting Moor Pool, meaning it will be a memorable experience. The varied open spaces Moor Pool provides are an easily accessible and rich resource for areas of learning, including; historical, geographical and social understanding, and understanding physical development, health and wellbeing.
Our learning experience
Moor Pool can be the focus of a compelling learning experience which develops students’ personal learning and thinking skills. Engagement with the vital open spaces will help young people appreciate their community values and how open spaces, allotments and sporting facilities contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Nettlefold: Birmingham’s visionary
- Key Stages 1, 2, 3
- Length of session: half day (2 hours) or full day (4.5 hours)

Uncover the secrets of a Birmingham hero through this dynamic session. John Sutton Nettlefold changed the face of Birmingham with his innovative planning ideas, as well as having a wider influence as towns and cities expanded. This immersive session uses costume, object handling and exploration of Moor Pool Estate to bring this important local historical figure back to life. Make the most of your local history study by combining a visit to Moor Pool with a second session at the Nettlefold’s family home, Winterbourne House. Discover the lives of different members of the household in this beautiful setting.

Moor Pool fires pupils’ imagination as they investigate how buildings around the Estate were specially designed for different purposes in order to build a vibrant community that has lasted well over a century.
Spot the many original architectural features and get hands-on with an exploration of building materials and traditional construction methods with a variety of activities.
The session encourages practical enquiry into the properties of building materials as well as considering what goes into building strong communities today.

This lively and interactive session uses the historical allotments at Moor Pool to teach pupils about where their food comes from and how to make healthy food choices.
Learning about plants, what they need to make them grow and how to keep them healthy, participants have the opportunity to sow their own seeds as well as harvest fruit and vegetables during the session. Fruit and vegetables can be taken back to school and used for extension activities back in the classroom.

Pass times in past times: Chad Valley Toys
- Key Stages 1 & 2
- Length of session: half day (2 hours)

The world famous Chad Valley toys began in Birmingham in the 19th century. Using examples of original toys of Chad Valley, and other replicas from earlier periods, this session gives participants the chance to get hands on with history and discover the toys and games from the past, as well as learning about materials and design.
