Nestled in the heart of the charming Moor Pool Estate in Harborne, Birmingham, Moor Pool Hall has been a centre for community life and celebrations since the early 20th century. Let’s take a walk through time, exploring how people have marked their important moments here, and why you might choose to host your next celebration in this wonderful space.
The Early Years (1910s-1930s)
The Hall was completed in 1910, designed as part of the Garden Suburb vision of the Estate. The idea behind Moor Pool was not just housing, but community facilities: reading rooms, sports, social gatherings — the Hall was central to this.
In these early decades, celebrations would likely have included: community dances and theatre productions, utilising the Hall’s large room and stage; May Day and children’s festivals; horticultural shows and other community events.
These formative years set the tone: a venue built for the local people, where celebrations were woven into everyday life.
Mid-Century (1940s-1970s)
As the decades rolled on, Moor Pool Hall continued to host birthday parties, wedding receptions, dance nights and community events. There were special celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation in 1952 and her Silver Jubilee in 1977, and we know that the Moody Blues performed for a youth group social in 1964.
"Parties were the main occasions that I remember. My seventh birthday we had in the Lower Hall, which I think everybody thought was quite impressive. But it was the usual, jelly and ice cream and stuff like that. And in the big hall, we used to have barn dances there quite often, so that would be a community thing. When I was seven we moved up to Wentworth Gate and there was always parties and discos, there was always something going on at the hall. They took a piece off what was my bedroom to make the bathroom so they had to put in a little window and that was on the side. And that was just the best place to be because you could hang out of the bathroom window and you could just see all this. You could see in through the hall windows across the tennis courts and you could see all the parties and the dresses and the weddings. There were loads of weddings that they held there. I spent a lot of time there, I was supposed to be in bed and I crept out and was sitting looking across the Circle."
